Plot summary
Karen McCann lives in Santa Monica with her husband Mack and their daughters: Julie, seventeen, from Karen's earlier marriage, and young Megan. One afternoon Karen calls home and Julie answers, preparing for Megan's birthday. A stranger breaks in, and Julie is raped and murdered while Karen listens. Detective Joe Denillo pursues the case, and DNA evidence points to Robert Doob, a supermarket deliveryman with a criminal record. At a pre-trial hearing, the judge throws out the case after the defense says it never got a DNA sample to test. Doob walks free. Mack wants the family to return to normal life, but Karen cannot let it go. She begins following Doob around the city, learning where he lives and watching him on his delivery routes.
