Plot summary
In Buda, Ábel is in his final year of high school and preparing for his history matura, distracted by his feelings for his classmate Janka. Janka is drawn instead to Jakab, the married history teacher at their school, and she tells Ábel about it, which leaves him crushed. György, Ábel's father, is an architect with nationalist views who has argued with Jakab about politics before. Janka does well in her oral examination; Ábel freezes at his and fails. He falsely tells György that Jakab failed him over a cockade, and György, recalling the quarrel, believes him. News of it reaches Erika, an ambitious journalist from Transylvania at a conservative daily, whose article turns the episode into a national scandal.
