Plot summary

Raymond Pope is a Montreal detective whose morals are questionable, and his wife has gone missing. Looking for her brings him to the estate of Elizabeth Kane, a wealthy woman with aristocratic manners and striking looks, and to Irina, Elizabeth's young maid, who is also her companion. A terrifying secret lies beneath Elizabeth's manner, and Irina shares in it. Pope finds himself drawn to Elizabeth against his better judgment, bodies begin to surface, and his inquiries into Elizabeth's past deepen the mystery around her. His obsession grows, and he gives no thought to how Elizabeth might answer his intrusion into her world.
