Plot summary
Lloyd Christmas is a limousine driver in Providence, Rhode Island, and Harry Dunne, his roommate, works as a dog groomer. Lloyd is taken with Mary Swanson, a passenger he drives to the airport for her flight to Aspen, Colorado. She leaves a briefcase behind, and he tries to hand it back, but her plane has already gone. Both men have just lost their jobs. Lloyd persuades Harry to drive the briefcase to Aspen in Harry's van.

- Nicolas Cage was proposed as Jim Carrey's co-star in Dumb and Dumber, but when he tried to negotiate a $2 million raise, New Line Cinema signed Jeff Daniels instead; Cage said he turned it down to make Leaving Las Vegas. Daniels, known then for dramatic roles, was paid about $50,000.
- 100 actors turned down the role of Lloyd Christmas, among them Steve Martin and Martin Short; Gary Oldman and Nicolas Cage were the original choices for Lloyd and Harry, while Chris Elliott and Rob Lowe were also considered for Harry.
- Jim Carrey's chipped tooth in the film was genuine, the result of a childhood fight with a classmate that he had long since had capped; for the role he simply had the crown temporarily removed from that tooth.
- The Farrelly brothers did not know who Jim Carrey was, knowing him only as "the white guy" from In Living Color, and became interested in casting him only after a screening of Ace Ventura: Pet Detective.
- John Hughes conceived Dumb and Dumber, originally titled Ski Nuts and about "two dumb guys in Aspen", then sold it to the Farrelly brothers and asked that his name be taken off the writing credits.
- The film's success launched the Farrelly brothers' careers, revitalized Jeff Daniels' Hollywood career by showing his comedic range, and cemented Jim Carrey's standing as a leading actor of the 1990s; it later developed a cult following.
- The Aspen scenes were actually shot in Breckenridge, Colorado and Park City, Utah, and the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado was transformed into the film's "Danbury Hotel".
- The music video for the Crash Test Dummies' version of "The Ballad of Peter Pumpkinhead" featured Jeff Daniels reprising his role as Harry.
