Plot summary
Diana Markham, a schoolteacher in London, is about to marry Oliver, a wealthy man. Nightmares in which he turns violent trouble her, and once she has moved into her new home she sees a blonde child with angel wings amid fire. The basement of the house frightens her. Her therapist, Deborah, says the dreams come from the stress of the wedding and from the press attention it draws. When the photographer Peck and the journalist Paul harass her outside the house, Jenny, a visitor from Los Angeles, drives them off. Over a drink Jenny says she was adopted as a small child and has come to trace where her family came from; her biological parents once lived at Diana's address. She remembers nothing of them. The two women agree to meet the next day.
