Plot summary
In the 1970s, skateboarding in Southern California takes its cues from surf culture, especially around Santa Monica and Venice, an area nicknamed Dogtown. There, the owners of the Zephyr Surf Shop, Jeff Ho, Skip Engblom and Craig Stecyk, put together a team of local teenagers, among them Jay Adams and Tony Alva. The riders skate when the surf is quiet, adapting surfing moves to polyurethane wheels. They practice on a hilly street near the shop and on the asphalt slopes around school playgrounds. During a record drought, backyard pools across the region are drained and the empty basins become places to ride. Vintage footage shot in the 1970s and later interviews tell the group's story.
