Plot summary
Sam Dodsworth, president of Dodsworth Motors, sells the company he founded twenty years earlier in a small midwestern town. His wife Fran feels trapped by their dull social life, so the couple sets out on the long European trip they had planned. On the crossing they meet congenial companions, among them Edith Cortright, an American divorcee who lives in Italy and understands Sam's wish to learn new things. Fran flirts with a younger Englishman, Captain Lockert, and then persuades Sam to bypass England for Paris. In France she cultivates a high-class social life and presents herself as far younger than she is, while Sam is content with the usual tourist sights.
