Plot summary
Five men are murdered across Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto with a sword and a bow, and the killer wears a Noh mask of an old man. Police link the dead to Genji Hotaru, a gang of antique art thieves. Its known survivors, a leader called Yoshitsune, a subordinate called Benkei and Ise Saburo, are unidentified. Kogoro Mouri brings Conan Edogawa to Kyoto at the request of Ryuen, a monk of Sannoji Temple. The temple's Medicine Buddha was stolen eight years ago, and a drawing claiming to mark its location has just arrived. Kogoro meets the priest Enkai and three supporters: art dealer Sakura Shozo, Noh performer Mizuo Harutaro and bookseller Saijo Taiga. Conan meets Heiji Hattori at Gojo Bridge; both are investigating the killings. Heiji recalls a Kyoto girl he loved as a boy and a crystal ball he keeps.
