Plot summary
Bob and Kathy come home from college for the summer and plan to spend the traveling carnival's last night in their small Southern town. Lily Carpenter, a grocery clerk, walks home feeling that someone is following her, and later visits the carnival with her grandmother Agnes. There, coach Neil Marshall shows an interest in Lily, and Ramona, Tom, Diddle, Sandy, Sheila and Walker are among the crowd. Earlier, Ted and Angie were murdered by the river and their bodies left in the water. The group arranges a bonfire by the river that night, and Bob and Kathy persuade Lily to join them.
