Plot summary
Roxanne, a beautiful orphan with little money, goes to the theater with Duke De Guiche, who is old and vain and determined to marry her. She wants to marry for love. As she takes her seat, she and Christian de Neuvillette, a newly recruited soldier, catch sight of each other and are at once infatuated. The performance stops when Cyrano de Bergerac, her childhood friend, drives the lead actor from the stage with a stream of rhyming insults and then duels a spectator who mocks his appearance. Cyrano is in love with Roxanne and she does not know it. She confides that Christian has won her heart and asks Cyrano to arrange a meeting. Christian, he discovers, cannot put his feelings into words, so Cyrano writes the letters that Christian delivers as his own.
