Plot summary
In 1536, an alchemist in Veracruz builds a mechanism that he believes will grant eternal life, and names it Cronos. He dies in 1937, when debris from a collapsing building pierces his chest, and the device is not listed among his belongings. Years later, a statue of an archangel turns up in the shop of the antique dealer Jesús Gris, and he finds a golden scarab hidden in its hollow base. He winds it; legs unfold, grip his hand and pierce his skin. His health and vigor return, he looks younger, and he develops a craving for blood. Meanwhile Dieter de la Guardia, a dying businessman who has spent years buying archangel statues in the hope of finding the device, sends his nephew Angel to the shop to buy the statue.
