Plot summary
In 1997, a plague spread by cosmetic products has wiped out every sexually mature woman. Adrian Tripod, who directs the House of Skin clinic on occasion, sets out to find his mentor, the dermatologist Antoine Rouge, who vanished after the plague. Word is that the virus has mutated and begun killing men as well. Tripod's search carries him through a defeminized world and into a succession of organizations, among them Metaphysical Import-Export and the Oceanic Podiatry Group. He meets men who are trying to adjust to a society without women, and he tries to hold on to his own morality in a world obsessed with sex.

- Cronenberg shot Crimes of the Future without synchronized sound because the Arriflex 35 camera he used was too noisy, and he had obtained that camera through a deferred rental from Janet Good at the Canadian Motion Picture Equipment Rental Company.
- Cronenberg's 2022 film Crimes of the Future shares its title with this 1970 film but is not a remake; the two are loosely connected because the "creative cancer" premise of the 2022 film also appears in the 1970 version.
