Plot summary

A microphone is held where the animals can see it, and the zoo's residents answer questions about their captivity and their surroundings. A family of polar bears speaks, and the youngest of them says it likes being there. A large Brazilian cat longs for the Amazon, for its roominess and its heat. An ape admits to boredom. A lemur and a turtle, who reads to escape, also talk, and a chicken rates her life above the lives her sisters lead in a circus. The creatures describe the food they get, the cramped and smelly quarters they occupy and the machinery that runs the zoo.

The film's voices came from real interviews: residents of a housing estate and a retirement home were asked about their living conditions by Julie Sedgewick, and Nick Park then shaped the clay figures' mouths to their recorded sentences so they appeared lip-synced.
Creature Comforts was popular enough that from 1990 to 1992 claymation commercials were made for the electricity campaign Heat Electric, using the same principle; the ads won several awards and led to the claymation TV series Creature Comforts, running since 2003 and shown in Germany on Comedy Central.
