Plot summary
When the war ends, Laurence Gerard goes back to France to find out who had his wife killed. His wife had worked for the Resistance, and they had been married twenty days. His father-in-law, Étienne Rougon, gives him a name, Marcel Jarnac, a Vichy collaborator reported dead in 1943, which Rougon does not believe. The police cannot describe him. Gerard finds a burned piece of a dossier on Jarnac and an envelope with Madame Jarnac's name on it, and the trail takes him to Buenos Aires. A stranger there, Melchior Incza, greets him knowing more about his business than he should, and Gerard accepts an invitation to a party given by Tomas Camargo, a wealthy businessman, where he meets the lawyer Manuel Santana and Madame Jarnac.
