Plot summary
Lloyd Hopkins is an LAPD homicide detective with a high arrest record and a reputation for ignoring procedure. A man reports a murder, and Hopkins visits the address alone, where he finds a woman's mutilated body and collects evidence without telling his superiors. At home he argues with his wife, who fears the influence he has on their eight-year-old daughter. He asks his partner Dutch Peltz for a stakeout, which ends when Hopkins shoots and kills the suspect; he then flirts with the suspect's date and drives her home. Classified ads found in the victim's apartment lead him to Joanie Pratt, an actress turned drug dealer and escort, whom he meets in a cafe. At the station, a poem written in blood and sent to the victim makes him think the killer has killed before.
