Plot summary
It is 1969, and Jamie Schwartz, sixteen, does not fit in at his all-boys boarding school in Pennsylvania. He has written a stage version of The Catcher in the Rye and believes the role of Holden Caulfield is meant for him. Staging the play requires the approval of the novel's author, J.D. Salinger, who lives in seclusion. After a series of hostile clashes with the boys at school, Jamie leaves campus to look for Salinger. On the road he picks up DeeDee Gorlin, a townie, and the two of them travel toward New Hampshire, where Salinger is said to live.
