Plot summary
As a boy in suburban New Jersey, Harry Stadling watches a man in a Santa suit come down the chimney on Christmas Eve 1947 and leave presents. Later that night he finds that same man groping his mother and runs to the attic, where a shard of a broken snow globe cuts his hand. Thirty-three years later Harry holds a low-level job at the Jolly Dreams toy factory, where the other workers consider him a schmuck. His apartment is decorated for Christmas all year and he sleeps in a Santa costume. From the roof he watches the neighborhood children through binoculars and notes which ones have been good. A coworker's lie and the company's talk of charity for a hospital leave him angry and unsettled.
