Plot summary
William Douglas Street is tired of his life. Working for his father wears on him, and his wife wants more money. He takes on whatever identity a situation calls for, passing as a reporter, a doctor or a lawyer and earning money that way. The story is a satire drawn from the life of the real William Douglas Street Jr., a con artist from Detroit who dropped out of high school and posed as reporters, lawyers, athletes, extortionists and surgeons.
