Plot summary
Raymond Moffat, Junior Moffat and Ned Tiese leave their small Southern hometown after a run-in with a white man and join the Army, serving in Vietnam with the Special Forces. They return to Kincaid County and find the Black residents kept from voting and treated as less than citizens in a place dominated by the Ku Klux Klan. The three veterans decide to help, and with a preacher's support they urge their neighbors to register so the community can take back some power. When hundreds of Black residents turn out to sign up, the Klansmen of the county answer with violence.

- The Klan billboard seen in the film was a real Ku Klux Klan recruitment sign, shot on U.S. Route 70 at the city limits of Smithfield, North Carolina. Such billboards were common in the 1960s South, but most had been removed by the time of the 1976 shoot.
- Quentin Tarantino liked the film and screened it twice at the Quentin Tarantino Film Festival. News of his advocacy was among the factors that led to the film being released on DVD in 2005, after it had been widely panned and largely forgotten.
- Executive producer Ronald K. Goldman thought acting in blaxploitation films was so unimpressive that untrained actors would do as well, so he used his contacts with the Washington Redskins to convince team members to appear. Their sports celebrity gave the film marquee value without the cost of experienced actors.
