Plot summary
Cuca's days in his village are spent playing in the forest and listening to the sounds around him. When his father takes a train to the city to look for work, the boy leaves home with a large suitcase that holds only a photograph of his parents. While he waits at the station, a gust of wind lifts him and sets him down in a world with two moons. An old man and his dog take Cuca in and bring him to the cotton fields where they work, and when the foreman dismisses laborers who are old or ill, the three travel on through the countryside. Cuca glimpses his father riding on a truck and follows the road, reaching a factory where workers turn cotton into fabric, then the city beyond it.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Boy & the World (2013)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Director Alê Abreu had the dialogue in Boy and the World recorded in backward Portuguese so the speech would be incomprehensible, and had the painted and pencilled world built from colored pencils, crayons, collage and paints so actions would matter more than words.
- Every sound in Boy and the World — animals, winds, machines, characters — was created from scratch rather than recorded from the real world, forming a language for how the boy Cuca perceives things. The only sounds left as real ones were thunder and the water of a flood scene.
- Boy and the World grew out of an animated documentary called Canto Latino about the social, political and economic formation of Latin America. Director Alê Abreu said the film "was born within another film" while he was developing that project at TVO.
