Plot summary

Mike Carter, a Los Angeles police officer, is suspended from duty, punches Lieutenant Borden and walks off the job. Days later at a baseball game, Freddie Dysen approaches him about guarding his aunt, Gene Dysen, a widow who runs Continental Meat Packing. Carter says no. That night an envelope holding two thousand dollars is pushed under his apartment door, and whoever left it is gone by the time he gets outside. He drives to the Dysen mansion in Pasadena, meets the household, and finds Gene Dysen has no interest in a bodyguard. He hands the money back to Freddie, but as he leaves, a shot is fired at her and the shooter escapes. Freddie talks him into staying one night, and Carter keeps the money.
