Plot summary
Antonio is a young Hispano boy growing up on the eastern plains of New Mexico in the 1940s. Ultima, a curandera or folk healer, comes to stay with the Márez family for the summer. Antonio is anxious about attending school and about being separated from his mother, and he is absorbed by wanting to know his destiny. His mother hopes he will become a priest for the farming community she comes from, while something in him answers to the wandering life of his father's people. As he gets ready for his first holy communion, he puzzles over good and evil. The killing of a war veteran, Lupito, troubles him too, and he fears God may punish his father for keeping company with the men involved. Ultima tells him legends of his ancestors and teaches him the old ways.
