Plot summary
A boy is playing in the woods with his father when a bear trap catches his father's leg. The man dies of the injury some days later, and the child is left alone in the woods. Ten years on, John and Julia DeWolfe drive their daughter Kara to New Jersey to spend time with the family of Sheriff Ross Carr: his wife Cleo and their daughter Mary-Rose. A traveling bible salesman, Franklin Ludwig, stops them with word that people have been going missing in the area. In Ellenburg, parents are frightened, and children keep disappearing. When Mary-Rose vanishes too, a psychic is brought in to find her.
