Howard Cosell
Biography
Howard Cosell was an American broadcaster, sports journalist and author whose career at ABC Sports spanned 1953 to 1985. Born in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and raised in Brooklyn, he practiced law before turning to radio, where he hosted Speaking of Sports. In the early 1960s his reports on Muhammad Ali brought him wider attention, and his analytical approach and readiness to take on controversial subjects changed how sports were covered on television. He joined Monday Night Football in 1970, called Olympic boxing and major heavyweight fights, and anchored the investigative magazine show ABC SportsBeat, which earned three Emmy Awards. He also appeared in Woody Allen's Bananas (1971) and Sleeper and had a cameo in Johnny Be Good (1988). TV Guide named him the best sportscaster of all time in 1993, and the Television Hall of Fame admitted him in 1994. He died in 1995.
