Plot summary

It has been ten years since Elizabeth McGraw left John Gray, and he is depressed and lonely. An invitation to a Paris exhibit showing some of Elizabeth's paintings sends him straight to France, hoping to speak with her. At the auction he outbids everyone for her work, but Elizabeth is not there. He does notice Lea Calot, a fashion designer wearing the same shawl he once gave Elizabeth. Lea says she was a close friend of Elizabeth and that Elizabeth is married and living in another country. John senses she is holding something back, and it becomes clear that Elizabeth shared private details of their relationship with her. Lea is openly attracted to John, and he begins to warm to her. He also grows close to Lea's assistant, Claire, whose boyfriend, Charlie, is violent toward her.
