Plot summary
G.H. is a sculptor who belongs to Copacabana's artistic elite, in Rio de Janeiro in 1964. A love affair of hers has ended, and the day before, Janair, the maid who works in her apartment, quit. G.H. takes on the cleaning of the apartment herself and starts with the maid's room. Inside, a huge cockroach crawls out of the wardrobe; G.H. panics and slams the door on it. The dying insect confronts her with her own horror of the world and with the prejudice of a society that treats other beings as subordinate, and it sets off a crisis in which she questions the conventions that hold her in place.

- After the film's premiere in Brazil, sales of Clarice Lispector's novel The Passion According to G.H. rose 69% in bookstores, according to publisher Rocco, which also issued a new edition of Lispector's complete work with an afterword by director Luiz Fernando Carvalho.
