Plot summary
In the Arizona Territory of 1868, Cochise leads the Apaches on the warpath, and Army Captain Bruce Coburn is ordered to escort homesteaders to Apache Wells, where the settlers are to gather their defense. Some of Coburn's men feel they are being driven too hard, and he disciplines Corporal Bodine for stealing rationed water. When the Apaches attack, homesteader Harry Malone is killed and his sons Mike and Doug join the Army, the younger Doug timid and untried. The garrison needs repeating rifles, so Coburn is sent to bring in a shipment, or at least keep it from the Apaches. The consignment is already on its way, and Coburn's patrol rides out to meet it.
