Plot summary
Soviet forces advance to retake Estonia from the German occupiers in the summer of 1944, and Estonians meet Estonians in battle. Many Estonians in German uniform have little commitment to the Nazi regime, and many in the Red Army feel much the same about the Communist one. On the Tannenberg Line, Estonian Waffen-SS soldiers hold their positions against a Red Army force superior in tanks and infantry. A Nazi official visits the line and hands out signed photographs of Hitler, which the soldiers greet with ridicule. The defenders fall back through streams of civilian refugees. Whichever side wins will treat the Estonians who fought for the other side as traitors, open to execution or deportation, and neither side offers Estonia self-rule. Karl Tammik serves in the German ranks; Jüri Jõgi serves with the Soviets.
