Plot summary
Beaver Mills, Alaska, north of the Arctic Circle, is preparing for a summer solstice festival held under a sun that never sets. Nearby, melting ice caps release a wyvern, a dragon-like beast long dormant in the ice, and it attacks a fisherman at a lake. Jake Suttner, an ice trucker who has worked as a handyman at the town café since a crash months earlier killed his brother, is waiting for his insurance claim to be settled. Colonel Travis Sherman sees the creature near his home and tries to warn the town, but nobody believes him, and the radio operator Vinyl Hampton refuses to broadcast an emergency warning. Sheriff Dawson and Jake look into reports of an attack outside town, where a doctor has gone missing.
