Plot summary
Between jobs, J.R. spends his days drinking and partying with the same close circle of friends in New York City, where he grew up Catholic. A young woman he gets to know on the Staten Island Ferry, who rides it just to pass the time, becomes the focus of his thoughts, and the two fall in love. His friends can tell she occupies his mind and they do not like it. As the relationship deepens, he turns down her offer of sex and decides to wait for marriage, believing only a virgin can be his wife. He speaks harshly of unmarried women who sleep with men, though he has been with such women himself. When she tells him about her past, he cannot accept it.

- Distributor Joseph Brenner would only release the film if a nude scene were added, so Martin Scorsese shot one over two days in Amsterdam with Harvey Keitel and Anne Collette, then smuggled the footage into the United States in his raincoat so it could be edited into the movie.
- Scorsese's first cut, footage of J.R. and his friends drinking and fighting in Little Italy, was in his words "a disaster and everybody hated it"; his former professor Haig P. Manoogian then told him to write new scenes featuring the girl and expand J.R.'s inner conflict.
- The film marked two debuts at once: it was Martin Scorsese's first feature as director and Harvey Keitel's first time acting in a film.
