Plot summary
Checco grew up comfortably in a small town in Apulia and, at 39, still lives with his parents. He holds a posto fisso, a guaranteed public-sector post, and does almost nothing all day. A reformist government pledges to cut back the bureaucracy, and Dr. Sironi is charged with shrinking the public sector by paying targeted employees to resign. She focuses on Checco, who turns down every offer rather than surrender his pay, his benefits and his job for life. Because he will not resign, she keeps appointing him to worse and worse postings, and in each place he finds a way to carry on as before.
