Plot summary
Tullymore is an Irish village of 52 people, and word arrives that one of them has won the Irish National Lottery. Jackie O'Shea, his wife Annie, and Jackie's best friend Michael O'Sullivan want to learn who the winner is. Mrs. Kennedy gives them a list of lottery customers, and they invite the possible winners to a chicken dinner hoping the lucky one will reveal himself. Everyone comes except Ned Devine. Jackie calls at Ned's cottage and finds him in front of the television with the winning ticket in his hand, dead of shock. In a dream that night, Ned seems to want the money shared with his friends, and Jackie and Michael go back to the cottage while it is still dark to gather Ned's details and claim the jackpot, which brings an inspector from the lottery office.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Jones developed Waking Ned as a roughly 10-minute short film before expanding it into a full-length script; he recalled that finance was very low and cast and crew worked for reduced fees, and that when the film was done they put it in the boot of a car and drove to Cannes, where they sold it to Fox Searchlight.
- Waking Ned inspired the 2006 Bollywood film Malamaal Weekly, directed by Priyadarshan, which was itself remade in Telugu as Bhagyalakshmi Bumper Draw, in Kannada as Dakota Picture and in Malayalam as Aamayum Muyalum.
- The film was shot on the Isle of Man, with the village of Cregneash standing in for the fictional Irish village of Tulaigh Mhór.
- Its 1999 gross of $19 million in the United States and Canada was the highest of that year for a limited release full-length feature film.
