Plot summary

Captain Hank Scott has delayed his retirement by a year to sharpen the skills of his daughter Kristin, the only woman on the Rawlings, Idaho Fire Department. Hank dies in a house fire on his last day of work, and although Kristin pulls a child from the flames, many of her colleagues blame her for her father's death. Trip Crandall, who is due to take over Hank's post, takes issue with her most. Two weeks of administrative leave pending an investigation follow, then a further incident with Trip brings a six-week unpaid suspension. During that time Kristin applies to train as a smoke jumper, the most dangerous work in the profession and something Trip never managed. Ray Kulhanek, one of the smoke jumpers, gives her a rough ride while taking an interest in her.
