Plot summary
A Federation documentary recounts the Four Years War, fought by the United Federation of Planets against the Klingon Empire, narrated by the historian John Gill and built from interviews with participants on both sides. The fighting opens at Arcanis IV, a prosperous Federation colony on the Klingon border. The Klingons, who do not consider the Federation a worthy adversary, hold the initiative for the war's first six months under their supreme commander, Kharn, while a Vulcan delegation under Ambassador Soval negotiates with little room to maneuver. Starfleet appoints Admiral Marcus Ramirez commander in chief to answer its losses.

- CBS and Paramount filed a copyright lawsuit on December 29, 2015, alleging the Axanar works infringed their rights through the Klingon language and "innumerable copyrighted elements of Star Trek". Court filings put Axanar's crowdfunding and related income at about $1.4 million, which informed the decision to seek actual rather than statutory damages.
- The Axanar feature-film Kickstarter launched in 2015 raised $638,471 from 8,548 backers against a $100,000 goal, and roughly $200,000 of that came in the final 49 hours after Star Trek alum George Takei shared his interest publicly.
- CBS and Paramount opened arbitration against Axanar Productions and Alec Peters in May 2022 over breaches of the settlement, and the award entered on September 1, 2023 left Peters owing $292,372.54 in attorney fees and costs plus interest of $80.10 a day.
- Under the terms of the settlement the filmmakers were allowed to release two 15-minute movies instead of the 90-minute feature they had planned.
