Plot summary
The film was shot in France and Egypt in 1980 as an essay in two parts. Readings about the struggles of poor farmers accompany shots of rural landscapes, and a second sequence turns to Egypt, to the peasant struggles there and to the country's liberation from Western colonial rule. A 1974 account about two militant Marxist writers imprisoned by the Nasser regime and a letter stand behind the project. That material is set beside the class tensions running through France in the years just before the 1789 Revolution, and written texts are quoted alongside the early nonfiction film of workers leaving a factory, made in 1895.
