Plot summary
Tetsuya Hondo, known as Phoenix Tetsu, is the right-hand man of Kurata, a Tokyo yakuza boss who decides to disband the organization and become a legitimate businessman. Otsuka, a rival boss, sees the retirement as a chance to seize Kurata's businesses and offers Tetsu a place in his own organization. Tetsu refuses out of loyalty to Kurata. Otsuka then sends his top hitman after him, and an attempt comes during a date with Chiharu, a Club Alulu singer and Tetsu's girlfriend.

- Nikkatsu bosses had warned Seijun Suzuki for years to tone down his bizarre visual style and drastically cut the budget of Tokyo Drifter to get results; instead Suzuki and art director Takeo Kimura pushed to new heights of surrealism and absurdity.
