Plot summary
After World War One the United States was an isolationist nation; today it maintains bases in over ninety countries, a military reach no other nation has matched. Whether that involvement can continue is the question this investigation pursues, noting that the country's population and economic power are shrinking relative to the rest of the world. The inquiry covers twenty-one countries on four continents and asks what would follow if the United States stepped back from the international scene and became a normal nation again, a republic rather than an empire. Among those interviewed are two political science professors in Kuwait, a former Kuwaiti minister of culture and communication, the vice president of a Serbian civic party and a German teacher.
