Plot summary
Randolph Carter tells Howard Damon and Joel Manton ghost stories in the graveyard beside the Winthrop house, a house the town has called haunted for three hundred years, since Joshua Winthrop was killed inside it. Joel proposes that they spend a night there; Randolph and Howard return to the university, and Joel stays behind. A second group arrives: football players Bruce Weeks and John Babcock, Wendy Barnes, whom Howard loves, and Tanya Heller. They settle into a room to trade ghost stories of their own. When Joel fails to come back, Howard goes looking for Randolph, who gathers flashlights and heads for the house.
