Plot summary
Rick Latimer is an alcoholic high school teacher. One night he spots Kimberly, his ex-wife, in a bar with the lawyer handling her divorce, fights him, and bashes the man's car with a baseball bat. He is arrested, and the board, ruling that his behavior has damaged the district's image, sends him to Brandel High, the school that takes in students expelled from other places and where gangs, knives and drugs set the rules. At an assembly Rick lays out his terms: the drug dealing stops, the hallways are for walking, and classes begin on time. Victor Duncan, at the head of the school's dominant gang, ridicules him in front of the students and walks out, and the room erupts, earning Rick the hostility of the teachers and of Jake Phillips, the head of security.
