Plot summary
On a Mong Kok minibus bound for Tai Po ride seventeen people: Yau Tsi-chi and Yuki, each visiting someone; the driver Suet; the fortune-telling insurance salesperson Mook Sau-ying; the computer technician Shun; and the married couple Pat and Bobby. Once the bus is through Lion Rock Tunnel the traffic has vanished, and by the second stop the riders believe they are the only people left in Hong Kong. Mook holds that destiny has gathered them for a paranormal event, while others offer explanations of their own. They swap phone numbers. Yau and Yuki set off together; when she speaks of missing her boyfriend, Yau notices a figure in a gas mask and says nothing of it. Then every passenger's phone rings with noises and mechanical screeches, and the group gathers at a diner to compare what they heard.
