Plot summary
Bernadette, six times divorced, proposes the club after meeting Prudie, a high school French teacher, at a Jane Austen film festival. Six members will read Austen's six novels, one a month, each hosting the group in turn: Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility, Emma, Persuasion, Mansfield Park and Northanger Abbey. Sylvia, a librarian whose husband Daniel has left her for a younger woman, comes at the urging of her childhood friend Jocelyn, who breeds Rhodesian Ridgebacks. Allegra is Sylvia's daughter. Grigg, a software company owner who reads science fiction, joins because Jocelyn invited him, meaning to introduce him to Sylvia. Prudie, meanwhile, tries to resist her feelings for a student named Trey, while her husband Dean is inattentive.
