Plot summary
Reporting on the Bosnian War in 1994, American journalist Simon Hunt romances a local Muslim woman who is pregnant with his child, and Bosnian Serb forces kill her when they overrun her village. Simon vows revenge on the Serb political leader Dragoslav Bogdanović, known as The Fox. His on-air meltdown costs him his network career, while his cameraman Duck is promoted. In the fall of 2000, Duck arrives in Sarajevo with Benjamin Strauss, the network vice-president's son, for a story marking the Dayton Agreement's fifth anniversary. Duck finds Simon, now a half-drunk freelancer, who says a source has located Bogdanović, wanted for war crimes and carrying a five million dollar bounty. Duck comes along to film it, with Benjamin in tow. Simon reveals his plan to capture Bogdanović and collect the bounty.

- The story came from Scott Anderson's Esquire article "What I Did on My Summer Vacation", about five Western war reporters who met in Sarajevo in April 2000 and decided over drinks to make a half-hearted attempt at catching the fugitive Radovan Karadzic.
- A UN officer from Ukraine became convinced the real reporters were a covert team sent to seize Karadzic and put them in touch with a Serbian secret policeman, who took them for a CIA black operations crew and asked for American passports for himself, his wife and their four children plus a share of the bounty.
- Anderson concluded that the UN and NATO were not merely uninterested in finding Karadzic but sabotaged attempts from inside their own ranks; four of the reporters he traveled with, Sebastian Junger, John Falk, Harald Doornbos and Philippe Deprez, appear in the film as unnamed journalists in the press pack.
