Plot summary
Ben, a writer in Seattle with no job and a divorce in progress, signs up for a six-week course to qualify as a registered caregiver. Elsa, an English bank office manager, hires him to look after her son Trevor, 18, who has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. Ben learns Trevor's routine and the two get on well. Trevor, sardonic and sexually frustrated, says his father left when the diagnosis came at age 3 and still writes letters that he ignores. Aware that Ben is grieving a loss of his own, Elsa warns him not to grow too close to her son. Trevor is fascinated by American roadside attractions, so Ben talks Elsa into a road trip to the world's deepest pit, and Trevor wants to see his father in Salt Lake City, where he runs a car dealership.
