Plot summary
In the early 1970s, William Hundert teaches classics at Saint Benedict's, a school for the sons of wealthy families. He wants his students to value honor and wisdom, and has a plaque above his door read aloud at the start of the year. A new student arrives midterm: Sedgewick Bell, whose grades are poor and whose father, Hiram Bell, is a senator from West Virginia. The boy disrupts lessons, does poorly in his homework, and slips off campus to a girls' school across the lake. Hundert meets Hiram Bell to talk about the boy's behavior and finds a man with little interest in his son's education. Hundert decides to work with Sedgewick anyway, and as their friendship grows the boy's marks improve. Sedgewick sets his sights on the school's yearly Mr. Julius Caesar contest, a classics quiz.
