Plot summary
The Joffrey Ballet in Chicago runs on a season of rehearsals and performances, along with injuries, scheduling problems, money troubles and clashes between dancers and choreographers. Its artistic director is Alberto Antonelli, a former dancer who is warm but demanding. He keeps giving prominent roles to Loretta 'Ry' Ryan, a talented company member who lacks cohesion with some of her colleagues; one dancer asks to be taken out of a number after his relationship with Ry breaks down. Ry waits tables at a trendy bar against her mother's protests, and she meets Josh Williams, a young chef working his way up a restaurant kitchen. Antonelli and the choreographer Robert Desrosiers choose Ry for a new work based on Hindu mythology after she performs Lar Lubovitch's My Funny Valentine outdoors in a thunderstorm.
