Plot summary
In the years before the Second World War, the Pāvulāns family lives in a Latgale village, where the customs and values of earlier generations are handed down in the home. Six-year-old Bonifācijs, called Bonuks, is learning what it is to belong to a family and to a village, and how to stand in relation to God and to nature. He has also fixed his affections on a woman who is already grown up, and he means to keep her from marrying another man.
