Plot summary
Claire Peterson teaches English literature at the school her son Kevin attends, and she lives apart from her husband Garrett after his affair. Noah Sandborn, nineteen, moves in beside them to look after the uncle he lives with, who uses a wheelchair, and his parents died the year before. He charms Claire, helps around her house, and becomes a friend to Kevin. Vicky Lansing, Claire's friend and the school's vice principal, wants her to sign the divorce papers. While Garrett and Kevin are away fishing, Noah asks Claire to help him cook a chicken, and she stays to eat with him. She gives in to him that night, wakes regretting it, and when she tells him it was wrong he punches a wall until his knuckles bleed.

- After the film's release “The Iliad, first edition” became the top search term on the online book marketplace AbeBooks, though spokesman Richard Davis said he could not match the book seen in the movie to anything then for sale there.
- Lopez said the film's entire four million dollar budget went “in front of the camera” during the 23-day shoot: the cast all shared one trailer and there was no craft service, not that type of luxury movie set.
- The film's story was influenced by the real-life story of Mary Kay Letourneau, a teacher who became involved with her underage student, causing her to be convicted for rape charges.
- In Curry's draft the character of Noah was younger, but director Rob Cohen made the conscious decision to age him to 19, because he felt it was “not healthy” and that audiences would lose sympathy for the protagonist.
