Plot summary
In Durham, North Carolina, in 1971, Ann Atwater presses an all-white judge panel for better housing for poor black residents and gets nowhere. When her daughter's school burns down, C.P. Ellis, the local Ku Klux Klan president, fears that black children will be sent to white schools. Bill Riddick brings the two of them together to run a series of charrettes on segregation and other issues in the city. Both refuse at first, since they hate each other, but each is persuaded. C.P. says plainly that he will not sit with Bill and Ann, who are black. Residents chosen from the group are to vote on the issues once the sessions end.
