Plot summary
Miranda Hollander reads a closed book by touch and teaches at a college. She lives with Tom Hollander, who raised her as his niece, and believes her parents died in an accident when she was a baby. After her birthday she passes out and ends up in a hospital, where she changes into alien form. Tom arrives the next morning, gives her a hormone shot and drives her to Mexico. On the road he admits that she came from his college experiment with human and alien DNA, carried out with his friend Forbes McGuire, and that hormone shots have kept her alien side in check since childhood. The parents she remembers were a story he invented. In Mexico the two search for Forbes, who has a hybrid of his own.
