Plot summary
Jeremy Barrett is taken into custody by FBI agent Nick Halton and put on a Columbia Airlines Boeing 747 headed to New York, in the company of other criminals and the federal agents escorting them. Barrett overpowers the escort led by Agent Taja, releases the other prisoners and takes control of the aircraft. He demands a ransom and a helicopter once the jet is diverted to San Diego, and he threatens to fly it into a populated area if his terms are refused. Halton, the man who arrested him, sets out to board the 747 while it is still in the air.

- The aerial scenes of the Boeing 747 in Sonic Impact were stock footage taken from Airport 1975, which had used a Boeing 747-123 freighter (serial 20390, registration N9675) leased from American Airlines but painted in the fictional Columbia Airlines livery seen in both films.
